The July Turku Sea Jazz program is ready!

2.5.2023

Turku Sea Jazz, which will be organized for the third time, will start at Cathedral Park Terrace on Wednesday 26 July 2023. Thursday will be spent on Seili island. The weekend concerts take place on 28–29 July in front of Forum Marinum Maritime Center on the bank of Aura river, where the audience gets to enjoy the hottest rhythms of the domestic and Nordic jazz scene, maritime atmosphere and delicious food experiences served by Turku Food & Wine.

Turku Sea Jazz starts with a free event on Wednesday in the wonderful milieu of Cathedral Park in cooperation with the John Nurminen Foundation. The title band of the Archipelago Sea Jazz festival series, led by clarinet master Antti Sarpila, will take the stage at Cathedral Park Terrace. During the break of the concert, a discussion on the Baltic Sea will be organized, where current expert guests will discuss the importance of marine research led by the John Nurminen Foundation. The discussion will be held in Finnish.

A concert trip to the island of Seili, which was very popular last summer, is also part of this summer’s festival program and is already sold out! On Thursday, 27 July, master guitarist Teemu Viinikainen’s unique solo concert will be heard in Seili Church, and in restaurant Seili, the unique PLOP trio will perform together with a legend of Finnish jazz, Junnu Aaltonen. Connecting vessel M/S Norrskär transports the concert audience in the morning from Turku to Seili, and returns to Turku in the early evening.

The festival area at Forum Marinum opens to the public on Friday. The concerts start at 6 pm. with new and touching music of the wonderful Aili Ikonen. Between the concerts on the main stage, a performance by jazz visionary Teppo Mäkynen and keyboardist-producer Nikita Rafaelov will be heard on the terrace stage. Friday night will be continued by the brilliant saxophonist Timo Lassy with his top trio, and the rest of the evening will be spent with old school funk of Ida Nielsen, a Danish star who became famous as Prince’s bassist, and her band The Funkbots.

Saturday’s festival day will be opened by Jukka Linkola Tentet, who is returning to the jazz arena with an album release concert. The swing doesn’t leave anyone cold on the terrace stage either, where the captivating Ilkka Arola Sound Tagine invites listeners to a spicy musical adventure. The multi-awarded, beloved Swedish singer Lisa Ekdahl brings international glamour to the main stage as part of the release tour of her new album Bang Bang i mitt hjärta. At the end of the festival, we will hear entertaining interpretations of well-known pop hits by the soulful Johanna Försti and a band consisting of the best of domestic jazz.

In addition to top music, the jazz oasis being built at Forum Marinum will serve culinary delights brought by Turku Food & Wine. There will be more news about restaurants and wine bars during the early summer.

Turku Sea Jazz is one of four festivals in the Archipelago Sea Jazz series. You can support the marine environment work of the John Nurminen Foundation at Tiketti when purchasing tickets.
