Olli Soikkeli NYC Trio

New York winds blow through the free opening night of Turku Sea Jazz as guitar virtuoso Olli Soikkeli brings his top-class trio to the stage at Cathedral Park Terrace. Having lived in New York for more than a decade, Soikkeli has established himself as an international leading name in modern gypsy jazz. Joining him in Turku are bassist Antti Lötjönen and drummer Teppo Mäkynen.

Soikkeli’s playing combines astonishing technical brilliance, speed and a strong melodic voice – qualities that have also impressed international media. The Wall Street Journal has named him one of today’s most significant heirs to the legacy of Django Reinhardt.

During the concert intermission at 7 PM, the John Nurminen Foundation will host a discussion titled Along sea routes to Finland and from Finland to the wider world, exploring the relationship between music and the sea under the theme of the Jazz Finland 100 jubilee year. Speakers include Olli Soikkeli, Forum Marinum CEO Ulla Teräs, and John Nurminen Foundation producer Maija Soljanlahti.
