Jazz arrived in Finland by steam ship a hundred years ago. What does maritime transport
offer jazz listeners today?
A discussion (in Finnish) organized by the John Nurminen Foundation traces the story of the Baltic Sea and jazz through their shared century-long history. Joining the discussion is Ulla Teräs, Director of Forum Marinum, who will share stories from the past as well as explore the role of museums in preserving the maritime heritage. Jazz musician Olli Soikkeli reflects on the movements and influences of jazz through glimpses of various coastal cities around the world. In a hundred years, airplanes replaced ships; now we are once again seeking more sustainable solutions for travel and connection.
The discussion explores what threatens the sea – or, for that matter, the flow of culture
along the shores. What valuable legacy do we want to leave for future generations – and
how do we do it?
