Selma Savolainen in the shade

Known for her fearless artistry and compelling vocal expression, Selma Savolainen is one of the brightest stars in Finnish jazz. Helsingin Sanomat has described her as an artist who has taken Finnish vocal jazz to a new level. Her English-language compositions combine modern jazz with the intriguing sensibilities of alternative singer-songwriter music. At the 2024 Emma Gala, her debut album Horror Vacui won the Jazz Emma award (Finnish Grammy).

In spring 2026, British label Whirlwind Recordings will release Savolainen’s second album, in the shade, which takes the sound of her six-piece band in a bolder and more outward-looking direction. Drawing influences from early 2000s British punk and the golden era of Brazilian música popular, the album’s themes range from parenthood to angry men and mass hysteria. The band’s raw interplay and radiant expression also make a powerful impact live.
