Trumpeter and composer Peter Somuah captivates his audience with warmth, deep groove, and swinging melancholy. His music merges jazz, funk, soul and West African traditions – especially the rhythms and moods of Ghanaian highlife music. Somuah is a self-taught talent who grew up in Accra, Ghana, listening to trumpet heroes like Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, and Roy Hargrove.

After studying at the Rotterdam Conservatory, Somuah was awarded the Erasmus Jazz Award for young talent in 2021, and the following year he won the prestigious Edison Jazz Award for his debut album Outer Space. Now based in the Netherlands, he has become one of the most exciting young jazz artists in Europe, impressing audiences with both big bands and his own outstanding group.

Somuah’s third and latest album Highlife, released in autumn 2024, is a tribute to the Ghanaian highlife tradition and its legends, such as Pat Thomas and Gyedu-Blay Ambolley. His compositions are rich in rhythmic expression and melodic nuance, exploring the intersections of modern jazz, afrobeat, and electronic music. At Turku Sea Jazz, audiences can expect deep groove, infectious melodies, and irresistible stage charisma.
