“Marius Neset is not the future of European jazz – he is its present,” declared jazz critic Brian Morton in DownBeat magazine in 2022.
Norwegian saxophonist and composer Marius Neset is a dazzling force of nature, both on stage and on record – a performer who astonishes, entertains, and draws listeners into his magnetic orbit. A versatile musician, Neset has explored not only jazz but also classical music and even progressive rock.
His signature sense of rhythm stems from his early musical beginnings on the drum kit at the age of five. He picked up the saxophone at eight, and by his early twenties, he was already being hailed as one of the most exciting young talents in European jazz. His true breakthrough came with the acclaimed album Golden Xplosion in 2011, followed by a string of solo releases on Edition Records and ACT. Neset has received numerous awards and accolades, both in his native Norway and internationally.
Neset’s versatility shines especially in his compositions, which have been performed by a wide range of jazz ensembles as well as chamber groups and symphony orchestras. His ability to create emotionally powerful moments and explore new directions in both composition and performance has led him to collaborate with top musicians across genres.
The Marius Neset Quartet features leading names in contemporary European jazz. From London come keyboardist Elliot Galvin and bassist Conor Chaplin, while drummer Anton Eger represents the Copenhagen scene.
Neset’s latest album Cabaret, released in early 2025, is a tribute to friendship and music. Recorded on a remote island, it captures the profound chemistry of this close-knit group and the rich musical heritage from across the globe that has shaped Neset’s artistry since childhood. Best of all, Marius Neset’s journey into the boundless possibilities of jazz is only just beginning.
